When picking a security camera like the VIGI C450, choosing between a 2.8mm and a 4mm lens boils down to a classic trade-off: Field of View (how wide you see) vs. Depth & Detail (how far you see).
Think of it like looking through your phone camera: 2.8mm is your standard or slightly ultra-wide view, while 4mm is a slight "optical zoom" in.

The Core Differences
| Feature | 2.8mm Lens | 4mm Lens |
| Horizontal Field of View | 109° (Ultra-Wide) | 90° (Narrower / Focused) |
| Image Characteristic | Objects look slightly further away but you see a huge area. | Objects look closer and larger, capturing better facial or plate details. |
| Best For | Close-up wide areas, indoor monitoring, wall-to-wall coverage. | Distant targets, narrow paths, specific entry points. |
Deep Dive: When to Choose Which?
1. Choose the 2.8mm Lens if you need Maximum Coverage
Because it opens up to a massive 109° angle, a single 2.8mm camera mounted in a corner can usually cover an entire square room with zero blind spots underneath or directly to the sides of it.
Best scenarios: Small retail shops, office interiors, living rooms, wide front porches, or small parking areas where you want to see everything happening in a tight space.
The Catch: Because the pixel density is spread across such a wide view, objects or people standing 15 meters away will look quite small and it might be harder to read a license plate clearly.
2. Choose the 4mm Lens if you need Object Identification
The 4mm lens narrows the view down to 90°, acting like a mild zoom. This concentrates your 5MP resolution onto a tighter target zone, giving you a higher DORI (Detect, Observe, Recognize, Identify) distance. In fact, a 4mm lens lets you recognize a face or car at a distance roughly 20-25% further away than a 2.8mm lens.
Best scenarios: Long narrow corridors, office walkways, cash counter registers (zoomed into the money tray), driveways, back alleys, or monitoring a specific gate/entrance from a distance.
The Catch: You lose the peripheral "edges" of the scene. If someone walks right under or slightly to the side of the camera, they might completely bypass its field of view.
💡 Quick Rule of Thumb for Your Deployments:
Go with 2.8mm for general situational awareness indoors or wide outdoor zones. Go with 4mm if you already know exactly where the target will be walking or driving past and you want crisp, identifiable details.
